Are You an Oxy-Phile?
For Immediate Release
Who isn't, you might ask. We're
all “lovers of oxygen,” the true meaning of oxy-phile. But for people
with lung disease and those who take care of them, oxy-phile
may take on a whole new meaning.
A new book by Dr. Thomas Petty
recounts the “Adventures of an Oxy-Phile.” It's the perfect book for
anyone on supplemental oxygen or living with someone who is. Dr. Petty
relates many individual stories from people on oxygen. He also supplies
information about sleeping, traveling, engaging in recreation, and exploring
sexuality.
“Adventures of an Oxy-phile”
is also a book about the science and technology of oxygen, but most
importantly, it is about the people who need oxygen and benefit from
it. It contains personal vignettes by Dr. Petty with his perspectives
about oxygen, from its scientific origins to current use.
Dr. Petty and his colleagues
pioneered the use of ambulatory oxygen therapy. He was the chairman
of the Nocturnal Oxygen Therapy Trial, the first controlled clinical
trial to show that ambulatory oxygen given for most of the day improved
survival, compared with stationary oxygen given for only approximately
12 hours per day, including the hours of sleep.
A great appendix answers those
most frequently asked questions.
The 97-page book is an easy-read
and a great companion for anyone wanting to know more about supplemental
oxygen. It is available
online through the American Association for Respiratory
Care's website for $5.95, plus shipping and handling.
In addition to this great reference
tool for oxygen patients, Dr. Petty is "Dr. Tom" on the American
Association for Respiratory Care's patient education site, YourLungHealth.org.
"Ask
Dr. Tom" answers many questions posed by individuals
seeking guidance and information on lung health.
