New Resources for International Members

May 20, 2008

In keeping with its mission to deliver state-of-the-art resources to the worldwide respiratory care community, the Association has just posted two new documents on its International Council for Respiratory Care (ICRC) web site.

Now practitioners everywhere can take advantage of a Chinese translation of the AARC’s popular “Guide to Aerosol Delivery Devices” booklet and access a copy of “Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilation: A Complete Learning Package.”

The aerosol booklet was authored by leading RTs Dean R. Hess, PhD, RRT, FAARC; Timothy R. Myers, BS, RRT-NPS; and Joseph L. Rau, PhD, RRT, FAARC. The NPPV package comes from Susan P. Pilbeam, MS, RRT, FAARC; John D. Hiser, MEd, RRT, FAARC; and Ray Ritz, BS, RRT, FAARC.

The Chinese translation of the aerosol booklet was spearheaded by the Taiwan Society for Respiratory Therapy and, specifically, Chia Chen Chu, RRT, a professor in the respiratory therapy program at China Medical University in TaiChung City.

“Chia Chen Chu actually asked us for permission to translate,” says John Hiser, who currently serves as chair of the AARC’s International Committee. “We were thrilled to do it because this is one of our goals for international efforts in the future. Eventually we want to provide educational materials in as many languages as possible and practical to meet the needs of our international members.”

Other translators included Dr. Chuen-Ming Shih, a physician at China Medical University; Chin-Jung Liu, RRT, wife of Chia Chen Chu and also a professor in the respiratory therapy program at China Medical University; Yueh-Hua Yuan, RRT, who was instrumental in founding the RT department at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital on mainland China; and Yi Hao Peng, also from mainland China.

Three of the five translators — Chia Chen Chu, Chin-Jung Liu, Chuen-Ming Shih — are former AARC International Fellows, and Chia Chen Chu is also an ICRC governor and a member of the executive committee.

The NPPV package, which was originally sent on DVD to all the RT schools in the U.S., was placed on the ICRC site to assist clinicians worldwide in their understanding of this technology and how it is becoming a larger part of respiratory care practice for professionals here and abroad.

Hiser says these two resources are just the beginning of AARC efforts to increase the availability of cutting edge materials to respiratory therapists and other clinicians around the globe. “The AARC International Committee is working closely with the International Council in an effort to identify the needs of our international members and which products will help to meet those needs,” says the committee chair. “Future plans include surveying our international members to get a better handle on what they need and want.”
