As you embark on your career it is important to remember that you carry the banner of more than 50,000 other therapists when you treat your patients every day. You represent not only yourself and your hospital, but your colleagues. Practice ethically, honestly, and with a commitment to excellence. There will be bad days. There will be patients you try your best to save who ultimately pass away. Do not measure your success or failure in the terms of one case. Rather, make yourself a promise: you will not leave work any day unless you have made a difference in the life of one patient. Whether that’s a hug for a frequent patient returning with COPD, or a smile you coax from a scared child, if you leave the profession better at the end of the day, you will be a robust success in this most noble of careers.

My one piece of advice would be to take full advantage of whatever growth opportunities present themselves along the way, and you’ll never be bored! We will need much respiratory care from bright, caring and flexible RT’s.

Congratulations on all your hard work now paying off. Literally! You are ready to use your skills in a variety of settings. Choose your place of employment that best suits you, but one word of caution: don’t take on too many places at the same time. Some students take full time jobs at one place and per diem at another to get different scopes of practice. The money will be great, but will you be burned out in five years? Remember how people say "Don’t work too hard"? Take that seriously. Don’t burn out too soon. Keep it like new, have fun, and when the going gets tough, take a deep breath, hold it a second, and slowly exhale through pursed lips. All the very best!

Dear Graduates,
There are not many people who can say, "I really feel the same way about my career choice 28 years later!" I have experienced all shifts and participated in the care of a multitude of patients of all ages. I’ve been in a supervisory position and I’ve been a "weekend warrior". That’s what happens in small town USA. That’s what happens when one works in a cardiopulmonary department. The best advice I can give to you is, number one, remember your commitment to the patient. Remember that your learning does not stop with your completion of a degree. The challenges that you will encounter will not always be positive, but it will be imperative to maintain a positive mental attitude. Be true to yourselves and to the profession. Join the AARC! Whether your choice is to work in a major medical facility, a community hospital, homecare, or other options that are right around the corner, I truly wish you well.
Good luck!

Congratulations on your achievement. Your learning does not stop at the diploma though. My advice to you is do not be in a rush to finish your treatments. Take the time to get to know your patients. It’s more than putting on a mask or listening to breath sounds. You’ll be amazed at what they reveal to you about their breathing when they trust you and know you CARE. Otherwise they give the answers they know you want to hear. Be passionate about your career, strive to learn things that are not respiratory but are related because they affect the pulmonary system. I remember when I graduated a while ago now. I was so slow and you will be too but you will find your routine and your "groove". Trust me, I know. Good luck graduates and welcome to the greatest career that there is. Oh, and have fun too.

I always tell my students that they should think about that one person in their lives that they trust the most, and if that person gives them report on a patient, don’t take his or her word and think everything is ok. People make mistakes; check things out for yourselves. I have been in this field for almost 15 years. One thing I have learned and am still learning is that you should treat others in the same manner in which you would like them to treat you. (When I use the word others, this could be your patients, co-workers, managers or any other person that you come in contact with.) This one principle, if put into practice will make a big difference in your lives and the lives of others. May the Lord bless you all and I am looking forward to work with some of you guys. Don’t be afraid of what’s ahead, you all going to be the best at what you do. I believe this now you just have to believe it too.

You have chosen well. We, who have contributed to get this profession (that we love) to where it is today, will soon be turning its future over to you. I know you will take good care of it. You will need to be smarter than we were, more adaptable than we were, and less judgmental than we were. I believe you can handle that. Thank you in advance for the good you will do. As one professional to another, we welcome you to your new calling; Respiratory Care.

Good Morning and congratulations to all you! Guess what? "You are the future of this profession". I entered this profession in September 1961, joined the AARC in January 1963 (I am still a member), and have never regretted my decision to make this my lifeís work. I am going to tell you the same thing my instructor told me from the very start which is this: This is a good profession and you will have good and bad times, have some happy and some sad times, save a few and lose lives but if you will get involved and stay involved, it will put food in your belly, clothes on your back and a roof over you head and that is what it has done for me for 49 years. It is my hope that you will join the AARC and your State Society and work to help make patient care better and work for the improvement and protection of this Profession. Good luck to you all and I hope to see you around.

Welcome to one of the most rewarding professions you can imagine! In any hospital you’ll find many lines and long, skinny tubes. At the end of most of them, you’ll find a person. Not a room number, not a diagnosis, but a person. Remember to always treat that person as you would want your loved one to be treated and you’ll do just fine.

Be all that you can be enjoy your patients, on a crazy day at work find out what little things make your day. Work in a hospital of people who treat all workers the same no one department is better than another. Teamwork is the answer and praise God for all he does for you to help get you through your 12 hour day. Treat all patients as you would like to be treated. Love all people care for and maybe you will make them smile. Enjoy life and say good morning to a new face on the street and maybe you can make there day. Everyday pray for someoneís life and you will go home feeling happier with yourself.

Congratulations. You have completed a challenging course of study. However, your learning has just begun. You must commit to learning every day. If no one challenges you then you must challenge yourself. Apply what you have already learned then learn something new and then look to apply it. The field of medicine is constantly changing. That’s what makes it fun. And remember, there is much more to the body than just lungs and a heart. Don’t become so narrow in your focus that you ignore all the anatomy, physiology and pathology. You will do your patients and yourself a disservice if you limit yourself. Widen your horizons. Enjoy yourself and make every day count.

Good luck!

Congratulations! I can still remember how excited I was to graduate and it’s been 27 years. My love for our profession has not dimmed over the years. For the past 19 years, I have worked as a Flight Respiratory Therapist for adult and pediatric patients. I get to go to work everyday and fly on a helicopter or airplane. It is truly the best job in the world! My advice is to work in an aggressive Respiratory Care Department and then you can take my place when I retire. Good luck to each of you as you embark on your journey of Respiratory Care.

Attend as many conferences that you can from the very start, at first the material will not make sense to you but as time passes it will all fall into place.
You may get opportunities to spread your wings outside of working in the hospital setting, give it a try. As an RT I worked with a Pulmonologist and did PFT’S and Stress Testing. Homecare took me into the patient home and gave me the opportunity to educate the patient about their disease process, very rewarding. I found that educating the patient made them more compliant with their treatment whatever it might be. I now do Sleep Studies and have been able to use the RT education and experience to educate patients about their breathing while they sleep as a Sleep Technologist. Don’t be afraid even when you don’t think you know what you are doing, when you have reached this level of your education you know more than the patient does about what is happening to them, when it comes to RT you will many times know more than the RN staff and sometimes more than the patient’s doctor. Congratulations, you have come a long way don’t stop now the opportunities are there, go for it.

After 34 years as an RCP and educator I am hopeful and confident that you will be at the bedside giving tomorrow’s patients your best efforts. 1. Be yourself
2. Use the gifts God has given you. Eyes and Ears. Look at your patients and listen to what the patient has to tell you about how they feel
3. When you have a very heavy load, take one patient at a time.
4. Do not think that since you have graduated you do not need to continue with your education.
5. If you have a 2-year degree, consider getting your 4-year degree. Hey, you are already in the learning mode.
Have fun with your work, enjoy the ability to help another human being live a better life.
